In memory of Mr. Robin Peard JP

HKIAC is saddened to learn of the recent passing of Mr. Robin Peard JP.

As a founding Council Member and past Vice-Chairperson of HKIAC, Robin made an immeasurable contribution to the development of HKIAC and arbitration in Hong Kong.  Among his many lasting legacies, Robin was closely involved in the establishment of HKIAC in 1985, and the drafting and passing of the Hong Kong Arbitration Ordinance (Cap. 609) in 2010, which enhanced Hong Kong’s standing as a major centre for international arbitration in Asia.  Robin also served on the HKIAC’s Proceedings Committee for many years and offered steadfast support in the promotion of HKIAC.

Robin was inducted to the Roll of Honour of the Hong Kong Law Society in 2017, a recognition of distinction for his contributions to the development of the legal profession in Hong Kong and to the practice of law, including being the first practising solicitor to be appointed as a Deputy Judge of the High Court in 1996.

Robin will be fondly remembered both as a highly respected lawyer and a kind and inspiring mentor and friend to many.  HKIAC expresses its deepest condolences to his family.

Neil Kaplan KC, Chair of HKIAC from 1990 to 2004, paid tribute to Robin, saying:

“I had the honour and pleasure of working with Robin almost from the day I arrived in Hong Kong in 1980. We worked together on many committees leading to the modernisation of Hong Kong’s arbitration law, the setting up and running of HKIAC and the adoption of the Model Law in Hong Kong. His wise counsel guided us over many years. Robin was the one to approach in a complex or difficult situation and his calm and thoughtful advice invariably saved the day.”

Peter Caldwell, Secretary-General of HKIAC from 1990 to 1998, said:

“Robin was a pillar of support to the development of HKIAC and arbitration in Hong Kong, and to me in my early days as Secretary-General at HKIAC.  It was from Robin, who was holding the reigns as acting Secretary-General for some months before I was appointed, that I took over.  It was typical of Robin’s modest manner that he never claimed to have been Secretary-General.  He was always ready to give wise and friendly counsel and was generous with his time.  He will be much missed by all who knew him.”

David Rivkin and Rimsky Yuen SC, current Co-Chairs of HKIAC, said:

“Robin dedicated significant time and energy in HKIAC’s development, whether by providing assistance in the reform of arbitration law, the setting up and promotion of HKIAC or otherwise.  Without Robin’s support, HKIAC would not be where it is today.  He will be deeply missed.”
